Along Washington Avenue, more than 250 local and Midwestern artists will be offering jewelry, ceramics, paintings, fiber art, woodwork and more from a multitude of colorful booths. There’ll be sampling at Cedar Creek Winery of their award-winning Strawberry Blush, assorted children’s activities in Cedar Creek Park, and the chance to ride a wagon to the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts to see fiber art displays, candle-making and have a cup of strawberry tea.

Take Home an Original Masterpiece

Don’t miss the annual Plein Air Painting Competition, organized by the Cedarburg Artists’ Guild, which draws talented artists from across the country. Each year, more than 150 artists arrive in Cedarburg—some staying here at the Washington House Inn, others with friends nearby—to take part in this beloved event. The phrase en plein air comes from French, meaning “in the open air,” and you’ll see exactly why as our picturesque streets, historic buildings, and rustic landscapes inspire artists of all ages to set up their easels outdoors in search of the perfect light and moment.

Artists compete for cash prizes and submit their work over several days, after which pieces are judged and displayed at the Cedarburg Cultural Center. The resulting exhibit—featuring hundreds of paintings—traditionally opens with a lively evening reception and draws art lovers eager to browse and purchase original works. With pieces ranging from affordable finds by emerging artists to investment-worthy works by nationally recognized names, there’s something for every collector. Be sure to attend the awards presentation and celebration for the chance to bid on one-of-a-kind pieces at exceptional prices.
