Leaves are still clinging to the trees in and around Cedarburg, but there’s a definite nip in the air that warns of cooler weather just around the corner. Farmers markets recently closed for the year, and already many of the shops are intermingling seasonal items on their shelves amidst Thanksgiving turkey platters and pumpkin-spiced candles, a subtle reminder to residents that any day now Santa’s Workshop will magically appear in front of the Cedarburg Community Center next to City Hall, proof that Christmas has well and truly arrived in Cedarburg.
Innkeeper Wendy Porterfield of the Washington House Inn says she absolutely loves this time of year. “Here at the inn, we go to town on decorating for the holidays,” she shares, “as do all the shops along Washington Avenue in the historic district. Storefronts brim with seasonal novelties and special gifts, and thousands of twinkling lights outline the rooftops of all the buildings. It’s not surprising that Cedarburg topped the list of Wisconsin’s ‘Best Christmas Towns’ in 2015!”
Visitors to Cedarburg have their pick of traditional holiday events such as Festive Friday Eves in Cedar Creek Settlement; the Cedarburg Artists’ Guild and Cedar Creek Settlement celebrate the season with three-day events; the Rivoli Theater is packed every night thanks to its Holiday Film Series that presents holiday classics beloved by all ages; there are concerts, a live Nativity, special events – indeed a multitude of holiday happenings including flickering luminaria illuminating Washington Avenue on Friday nights and horse-drawn carriage rides.
