If browsing original art, sipping award-winning wine and munching on plump, juicy strawberries are all equally high on your list of favorite summer activities, be sure to plan a visit to Strawberry Festival in downtown Cedarburg on June 27 and 28. Now in its 30th year, the free, family-oriented festival attracts thousands of visitors to the historic downtown, and offers an assortment of strawberry delights destined to please every palate. From strawberry shortcakes to strawberry slushes, strawberry pie, to strawberry brats, strawberry crepes to chocolate-dipped strawberries – these and more will be available from vendors located all over town. And,in addition, Schmit’s Berry Farm of Mequon will be selling quarts of freshly picked strawberries just so you can take some home.
Along Washington Avenue, more than 250 local and Midwestern artists will be offering jewelry, ceramics, paintings, fiber art, woodwork and more from a multitude of colorful booths. There’ll be sampling at Cedar Creek Winery of their award-winning Strawberry Blush, assorted children’s activities in Cedar Creek Park, and the chance to ride a wagon to the Wisconsin Museum of Quilts & Fiber Arts to see fiber art displays, candle-making and have a cup of strawberry tea.
Remember, too, the 15th Annual Plein Air Painting Competition, organized by the Cedarburg Artists’ Guild, that lures hundreds of artists from across the country. Starting June 17, more than 150 artists have arrived in Cedarburg to compete in the event – some staying here at the Washington House Inn, and others in nearby homes of friends and acquaintances. The phrase En Plein Air is taken from the French language, and means “in the open air,” which is why our picturesque streets, historic buildings and rustic landscapes will embrace artists of all ages as they set up their easels outdoors in search of the perfect location and the perfect time of day to capture a winning image on canvas.
Competing for $8,700 in cash prizes, artists may submit their work through Thursday, June 25, at which time the art will be judged and then displayed at the Cedarburg Cultural Center for the next three days, which also happens to encompass Strawberry Festival. The exhibit of 500+ paintings will open at 10am on Friday, June 26, and historically draws crowds of art-appreciative folks in search of original art at excellent prices. Prices range from as little as $75 for up-and-coming artists to several thousand for nationally known artists. Attend the awards presentation and party on Friday evening at the Cedarburg Cultural Center (6pm-8pm) to see which painting took the “best of show,” and to bid on unique works of art at rock-bottom prices.
