If Cedarburg is on your bucket list of places to visit, you might consider planning a trip during the third weekend in March … that’s when Cedar Creek Winery is celebrating its Annual Open House on March 19 and 20. Sister winery to Wollersheim Winery in Prairie du Sac, which was named Winery of the Year at the San Diego International Wine Competition in 2012, the two wineries are owned by the same family and share the same winemaker, Philippe Coquard, who hails from the Burgundy region of France.
If growing your own grapes is something you’ve always wanted to do, be sure to arrive at the winery on Saturday at 11am when Philippe will demonstrate how proper pruning plays such a critical part in controlling the amount of growth and fruit that a vine produces each year. If that’s perhaps too much information to absorb in one sitting, don’t worry … the winery offers a DVD which covers all aspects of planting, growing, pruning and more. So take one home and watch it at your leisure.
Barrel tasting will be offered both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Get a sneak preview of the Marquette as it barrel ages in the cellar, and you’ll come away amazed at how many steps it takes to get the grapes from the vines, through the aging process and finally into your glass to swirl and enjoy.
Local chefs – Michael Jozwiak from The Stilt House and Brian Taylor from the Anvil Pub &Grille – will be sharing cooking expertise and giving tips how to incorporate wine into special dishes. And, there’ll also be samples to nibble on and pieces of Wisconsin cheese to savor. Enjoy mellow music by singer/musican Joey LaVie both afternoons; spring showcases on the landing; and, if shopping is on your agenda, grab one of the Settlement tote bags and visit all 25 shops in Cedar Creek Settlement to find discounts and giveaways valid that weekend only.
Our cozy Cedarburg inn may still have one or two rooms available, come stay with us and enjoy this eventful weekend.
